1 Timothy Discussion Questions for Class #1

Text: 1 Timothy 1 [Please read the text through and then answer these questions]

 

1. Who was responsible for Paul being appointed as an apostle? Does this mean that we should listen carefully to what Paul writes in his letters? What book in the bible records the account of Paul being specially chosen by God/Christ?

 

2. At the time Paul wrote this letter, to whom was he writing?  Since Paul didn’t address this letter to me, does this mean that I don’t have to apply it to my life?

 

3. In verse 3 Paul reminds Timothy of a time when he asked him to stay behind in Ephesus to do some more teaching. Use your bible’s cross reference to find out where in the scriptures this is recorded.  Look in the verses before this reference to find out what had just happened before Paul left for Macedonia?

 

4. What does listening to “fables and endless genealogies” mean? What does this type of thing cause in a congregation?

 

5. The reason (or purpose) for Paul giving the commandment to teach no other doctrine was love. What were the three sources of that love listed in verse 5?

 

6. From verses 6-7, tell what happened to those who did not keep (or strayed from) the commandment?

 

7. In verse 9, Paul writes that “the law is not made for a righteous person, but for….. (Paul lists a variety of sinful people). Please write down and look up the meanings for any of the sins that you do not understand. Be ready to share what you found in class. You can write them on the back of this sheet of paper.

 

8. Why was Paul thankful to Christ Jesus?

1 Timothy Discussion Questions for Class #2

Text: 1 Timothy 2 [Please read the text through and then answer these questions]

 

1. For whom does Paul encourage (or exhort) Timothy to pray?  

 

2. What is the difference between supplications, prayers, intercessions and giving of thanks? Please look up the meanings of these words.

 

 

3. When we pray for our leaders, what are we hoping will be the results?

 

4. What is God’s desire for all men?

 

5. Who is the one Mediator between God and men? What does a mediator do?

 

6. Paul said he was appointed as what? With this appointment what was he expected to do?

 

 

7. What does Paul desire that men do? Do you think he means that when men pray, they have to hold their hands up or is he using this expression to indicate a certain attitude?

 

8. In verse 9, Paul says that “in like manner” (or in the same way) as the men pray (in verse 8), let the women adorn themselves. Their focus should not be on what things when they choose their clothes to wear?

9. From verse 10, what should women focus on when choosing their clothes? Could this attitude apply to men also?

 

10. What does Paul say that a woman is not permitted to do?

 

11. From verses 13-14, why are women given the role of being in submission to men?

Text: 1 Timothy 3 [Please read the text through and then answer these questions]

 

1. Research question: What are some other descriptive names for the men who hold the position of bishop? List scriptures

 

 

 

2. Does a bishop have to have all of the qualifications found in verses 1-7? Wouldn’t it be all right if he just lacked one of them?

 

3. Why does it matter how an elder’s children behave if the elder is a good man?  

 

4. Look up the term “deacon” in a bible dictionary and see what it means.  Does its meaning give you any ideas about what kinds of duties a deacon might be given?

 

 

5. What qualities does a deacon’s wife have to have? Do you think these are qualities that any Christian woman should have?

 

 

6. What do deacons, that serve well, obtain?

 

7. If Paul thought that he would see Timothy shortly, why did he write him this letter?

 

8. In verse 15, does “the house of God” refer to the church building or meeting place? If not, to what does it refer?  

9. The church is called the “pillar and ground of the truth”. Why do you think it is described this way?

 

10.”The mystery of godliness” is composed of six simple facts listed in verse 16. To whom or to what are these facts referring?

1. In verse 1, who is making special point to warn Timothy (and us) that some would leave the faith?

2. Are there any foods/animals that we are not allowed to eat? How are we to receive the foods that God provides for us through his creation?

 

3. As an instructor and a minister of Jesus Christ, what was Timothy to be nourished in?  Thought question: How do we get this nourishment?

 

4. Which is most beneficial to us, bodily exercise or exercise toward godliness? Why?

 

5. Why does Paul say that they labored and suffered reproach?

 

6. Does Paul think of Timothy as a young man? Why do you think this?

1. How should Christians treat their believing masters?

 

2. From verses 3-5, Paul warns Timothy about those who are without wholesome words, are proud, and obsessed with disputes and arguments over words. What does Paul tell Timothy to do with such men?

 

3. What does Paul say is great gain?

 

4. What three things are we to be content with? (hint: verses 6-8).

 

5. What desire leads to temptations, snares, and foolish and harmful lusts?

 

6. What is “the love of money” a root of? What have some strayed from because of “the love of money”?

1. Where is “the promise of life” found?

3. What word does Paul use to describe Timothy’s faith? What does this word mean?

 

4. What kind of spirit has God not given us? What kind of spirit has He given us? What will this spirit help us do?

 

5. Paul asked Timothy not to be ashamed of what?

 

6. How has God revealed to us “His purpose and grace” for salvation?  

 

7. Why wasn’t Paul ashamed? (After all he was in prison.)

2 Timothy Discussion Questions for Class #8

Text: 2 Timothy 2 [Please read the text through and then answer these questions]

 

1. What does Paul tell Timothy to do with the things he had heard (learned) from him? Should we do this also?


2. What does Paul compare a Christian to in verses 3-4? verse 5? verse 6?  Be prepared to discuss how a Christian is like these people.  

 

3. Paul said he was in chains. What was not chained, however?

 

4. Paul says he endured all things for the sake of whom? Who are the elect?

 

5. How does verse 15 apply to you? (Please read verse 15 from 2-3 Bible versions to help you understand it.)

2 Timothy Discussion Questions for Class #9

Text: 2 Timothy 3 [Please read the text through and then answer these questions]

 

1. What did Paul warn Timothy would come in the last day?

 

2. In verses 2-5, Paul gives a description of mankind and their sinful qualities during the last days. Their main problem seems to be that they loved other things rather than loving God. List the things they loved. What should we do with such people?

 

3. Verse 6 in the NKJV indicates that what type of women are led astray by that sort of people? What does this word mean?

 

4. What do “men of corrupt minds or depraved minds” resist?

 

5. From verses 10-11, what words describe how Paul wanted Timothy to follow his example?

 

6. Paul says the Lord delivered him out of all his persecutions and afflictions. Does this mean that Paul didn’t have to go thru any trials? What does it mean?

 

7. Who will suffer persecution?

 

8. Who do you think instilled in Timothy the Holy Scriptures from childhood? Were these Holy Scriptures the same Bible as we have?

2 Timothy Discussion Questions for Class #10

Text: 2 Timothy 4 [Please read the text through and then answer these questions]

 

1. Who will judge us? When will we be judged?

 

2. When did Paul tell Timothy that he needed to be ready to preach the word? How was he to do this preaching?

 

3.  Why will people stop enduring sound doctrine and turn their ears away from the truth?

 

4. In verse 6, Paul refers to himself as a drink offering being poured out. Find out what a drink offering was (you may need to refer to a bible dictionary.) What is Paul really saying is going to happen to him?

 

5. Why was Paul so confident that, when the Lord judged him, he would receive a crown of righteousness? Does Paul have that hope for us also?

 

6. Why did Demas forsake Paul? Can this happen to us if we are not careful?

 

7. Paul asked Timothy to bring some things to him. We know that Paul was in prison at this time. What were these things and why do you think Paul might have needed them (see verses 13 & 21)?

 

8. Why did Paul warn Timothy about Alexander the coppersmith?

 

9. Did Paul hold a grudge against those who forsook him when he was going through trials?

Titus Discussion Questions for Class #11

Text: Titus 1 [Please read the text through and then answer these questions]

 

1. Who wrote this letter? To whom was it written? What does the author call him?

 

2. Thought question: In verse 2 Paul says that God cannot lie. Why do you think that God cannot lie?

 

3. How did God manifest (make known) His word? Is this the way His word is made known today?

 

4. Why did Paul leave Titus in Crete?

 

5. Compare Titus 1:6-9 with 1 Timothy 3:1-7. Are there any qualifications for elders listed in Titus that are not listed in the letter to Timothy?

 

6. According to verse 11, why were some teaching things they ought not teach? Is this still a problem today?

 

7.  In verse 13, Paul tells Titus to rebuke “them” sharply, to be sound in the faith, etc. Do you think that the “them” is referring to the elders Titus will appoint or to the false teachers? Why?

 

8. Paul said there were those who “profess to know God, but in works they deny Him.” What word would describe a person who says one thing but does another?

 

9. List the three descriptive terms Paul uses in verse 16 to describe the person of question 8 above.

Titus Discussion Questions for Class #12

Text: Titus 2 [Please read the text through and then answer these questions]

 

1. At the end of chapter 1, Paul talks about how false teachers act and what they teach. He begins chapter 2 telling Titus what he should do. What did he tell him he should do?

 

2. List the 5 different groups or categories of people that Titus was to give specific admonitions to.  

 

3. From each group, find an admonition or word you do not understand. Write it down and look up its meaning. Be prepared to share and discuss these with the class.

 

 

 

 

4.  From verse 8, why does Paul tell Titus that the young men need to conduct themselves properly?

Titus Discussion Questions for Class #13

Text: Titus 3 [Please read the text through and then answer these questions]

 

1. In verses 1-2 Paul tells Titus to remind people of things they should do. Do these verses remind you of what Paul told Timothy in 1 Timothy 2:1-2? How will obeying these commands lead to having a quiet and peaceable life?

 

2. In verses 4-7 there are at least four different qualities (or characteristics) of God that have resulted in His providing salvation for us. Please list at least four of these qualities.

 

3.  From verse 5, what cannot save us? According to and through what are we saved?

 

4. When do you think we receive the “washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit”?

 

5. What did Paul want Titus to “affirm constantly” (speak confidently, NASV)?
